If you’re a lover of all things Viking, then you might be looking into Norse mythology games to play.
Fortunately, game developers have capitalized on the popularity of Norse mythology over the years and have created some truly stunning games to satisfy the itch.
From massive open-world RPGs to more story-based worlds, these Norse mythology games will keep you coming back for more.
1. God of War
God of War is one of the best Norse mythology PC Games and, best of all, it comes in a series — so when you’re done with one, you can move on to the next, all the while enjoying the Norse mythology it brings to your screen.
The first game follows the Spartan warrior Kratos, who is sent to kill the god of war, Ares. You find out soon into the game that Kratos has his own history with Ares that provides a much deeper story and gets the player invested in his revenge.
The series of games follows Kratos as he goes on his journey and meets a lot more of the Norse gods, even involving the huge classics like Zeus. For those who want to see a lot of the Norse gods, this is the perfect Viking video game.
2. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
For a haunting story that will stick you for a long time, you can’t do any better than Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.
Senua has lost her lover and wants to save his soul from Hela. She has a curse where she can hear spirits and, disturbingly, carries her dead lover’s head to guide her towards him.
The game deals with many heavy themes, including mental illness and abuse, so those looking for a lighter Viking game may wish to choose something else. However, for players looking to involve themselves in a deep story that’s often emotional and loaded with tidbits of Celtic and Norse mythology, there’s no better choice.
The game focuses on two different main styles of play: exploration and combat, which means it never gets a chance to get stale. There are also puzzles available throughout the game to unlock gates and progress, often based on Norse mythology.
The beauty of this game means you’ll want to immerse yourself further into the Viking world after playing. Go and buy some Viking jewelry and clothing after to get the Senua aesthetic!
3. The Frostrune
The Frostrune is a click-and-point adventure based on Norse culture.
After a summer storm, you have been shipwrecked on a remote island. After some exploration, it seems like the people who used to live here left urgently, and the player must solve the mysteries of the island by exploring. Entering the forest, they’ll see different Norse runes and be left to work out exactly why the inhabitants left and what the threat is.
It’s a beautiful game that attempts to be very accurate to Norse culture and mythology, and it’s much less involved than God of War and Senua’s Sacrifice, so if you’re looking for something a little lighter then it’s a good choice. Most people can beat the game in less than five hours, so it can also be completed in one sitting.
4. Valheim
With over six million downloads, Valheim is one of the most popular Viking video games to date — and it only has an early access release available, speaking volumes about how enjoyable it is.
In this world, murdered Vikings must prove themselves worthy of Valhalla. They must do this by defeating the things that threaten Valheim, the powerful enemies of Odin.
The great thing about this game is that you can play it co-op. Up to ten players can enter this survival world, so it’s fun to work together with friends and find your way to Valhalla by defeating enemies. You can also play PvP, if competitive is more your style than co-op.
Not only must you defeat enemies in combat, but you must find the supplies to survive by building shelters and foraging for food. If you don’t, your health bar will deplete, so beware.
5. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Available on just about every platform there is, there are few gamers that haven’t heard of the Elder Scrolls series — and Skyrim is their most popular game to date.
Set in a vast open world, you can choose your race and go off on your adventure. There are infinite things to do in this game and gamers put hundreds of hours into exploring the world, defeating enemies, and building their skills to become increasingly powerful.
The Norse mythology influence in this game is much more subtle than some Viking games, but definitely there. The character of Kyne, for example, is a clear parallel to Thor and there are shieldmaidens and ancient crypts with some very Norse-sounding names.
If you want a game to lose many hours of your life to, this is the one to choose! If you plan on playing all of these games, save this one for last so you can dedicate the time to it that it both demands and deserves.
