Are you tired of buying backpacks for your kids year after year? Are you not getting the best value for your money when you order the school backpacks? There could be number of reasons why school backpacks do not last long and why you fail to get the best value for your investment. One among them is the way your kids handle the school bags. You cannot expect them to treat the school bags the same way adults would treat. For children their school backpack is another toy and that is why they play with the backpacks zippers and toss it around and so many other things that an adult would never do with their backpacks. When the same children grow up they will use it for the purpose for which they are meant to be used. Until then it is your responsibility to teach your children the basic backpack care and to encourage them to follow the basics of backpack care.
Teach your children to store the backpacks in a place where the backpack will not be exposed to undue sunlight or moisture. If the backpacks are exposed to damp conditions they will start forming molds and they will also start smelling bad. You do not want your backpack to carry mold. If the backpacks are stored in a place where it is exposed to direct sunlight for long hours then the backpack will fade fast and will have an older look.
Backpacks should be washed regularly. If your kids are old enough teach them to wash the backpacks themselves. While washing make sure the bags are dried in shade and that you do not toss it in the spinner or in the dryer as it will damage the backpacks. Before washing the backpacks remove all the contents of the backpack and ensure that no pencils or pens are left in the pouches as it could be damaging the backpack by poking the backpack material from inside.
Encourage your children to carry just what is needed for the day and not carry everything every day. Do not overload the backpacks. It is not only not good for the backpacks but it is also not good for your child’s back. Children should not carry more than 10% of their body weight. However, most of the backpacks today weigh 20% to 30%.
No sharp objects should be carried without proper cases. If your kids need to carry scissors or any other sharp objects make sure they are well packed and if they are carrying them in cases the case lids should be in tact so that the sharp objects do not tear the backpack material.
Teach your children not to drag the backpacks from one place to another but carry them carefully. All these are just the basics but for kids it may not simple rules to follow. You need to ensure that these basics are followed by constantly monitoring whether or not your kids are following the above guidelines.
